They are part of everyday life and have a long history of use in society. The word scale, which is used to refer to a device that measures the weight or mass of an object or person, is actually using a shortened version of the phrase &#8220;weighing scale&#8221;. Weighing scales have been used, in various forms, for centuries. Some sources place the invention of the first scale, the balance scale, in the Middle East as early as the year 4000 B.C.</p>
<p>The balance scale, which was the only kind of scale around for hundreds of years, had a fairly basic design. It consisted of a mounted beam with arms of equal length, and pans, or scales, suspended from the end of each arm. An object of unknown weight was placed in one pan while standard weights were added to the unknown pan. The user would place weights in the pan opposite the item being weighed until the two pans were level. Then the user would calculate the weight of the object in question by counting how many weights he had placed in the opposite pan. Although the balance scale was the primary scale used all around the world for many years, today we have other types of scales to choose from.</p>
<p>The spring scale was invented by Richard Salter in 1770. A spring scale works by measuring the amount of force an object exerts on a spring. This amount of force is directly proportionate to how much the object weighs. Spring scales, which are sometimes also called Newton meters, measure force in Newtons, but today&#8217;s scales often offer users readings that are already converted to <a href="http://www.arlynscales.com/digital-scales-for-decimal-places-s/179.htm" target="_blank">weight in kilograms or pounds</a>. Spring scales come in different forms. Some, like older bathroom scales, are flat and have internal scales. Others are hanging scales, meaning the object being weighed is suspended from a hook or pan that is on one end of a spring.</p>

They can also sometimes be found in the deli section of the supermarket.</p>
<p>Hanging scales are often used on farm and in factories, and can easily be purchased with up to a 10,000 pound capacity. Hanging scales are also used in more industrial settings. Cranes can be equipped with hanging scales in order to building materials at construction sites or other very large objects.</p>
<p>One of the advantages of using a hanging scale over other types of weighing machines is their portability. A small hanging scale can be attached to a variety of surfaces. Additionally, especially in the case of crane scales, hanging scales can be maneuvered in to weigh things that could not otherwise be reached or are difficult to move. For example, hanging scales are often used by medical facilities to weigh handicapped and bedridden patients.</p>
<p>One of the disadvantages of using a spring scale, in particular, is that they are sensitive to the gravity of the place in which they are used. This is because the spring scale measures the force an object exerts on the spring inside the mechanism. This means that because gravitational force varies in different parts of the world, spring scales can give different readings of the weight of the same object when placed in different locations. Because of this if the user wants an accurate reading many spring scales must be recalibrated taking into consideration the gravitational pull of their current location before using their scale.</p>
<p>Fortunately today digital scales are available for purchase that offers the user the option to have their scales automatically calibrate themselves. It would be reasonable to try to measure the contents by measuring the gas pressure. But liquefied gas tanks will show full pressure if there is any gas at all in the tank. This is because the liquid will “boil” into gas. As soon as the liquid is depleted, the full pressure will quickly drop to no pressure at all. Another method is to use a sight gage on the side of the tank. This is usually not at all practical.</p>

This type of industrial scale, manufactured by Arlyn Scales, has a very low profile stainless steel platform, easing the task of moving the full cylinder onto the scale or off. For the same reason, it must be extremely rugged. Located inside of the electronic scale platform is an extra wide, stainless steel sensor. These are particularly well suited to withstand the huge torque loads that are developed when a full tank is resting on the edge of the platform.</p>
<p>Cylinder scales may be directly connected to existing process instrumentation. One of the standard interfaces, used widely, is a 4 – 20 ma analog current loop. While this interface is available, it is advisable to use a digital interface whenever possible. The most widespread method for sending data from industrial scales is the RS-232 standard. Other, more recent standards include the Universal Serial Bus (USB). Another, more advanced method is offered by <a href="http://www.arlynscales.com">Arlyn Scales</a>. An Ethernet connection provides a method of data transmission from the cylinder scale into a local area network. Any computer on that network can now access the scale data. With additional software packages, that same data can become available over the Internet.</p>

Flow meters are used to measure the rate of flow of a liquid or gas. But in some situations, it is possible to utilize a high quality industrial scale to perform both functions. <p>A small container of liquid or liquefied gas may be weighed on a bench scale or cylinder scale. Larger tanks will be weighed on <a title="Platform Scales" href="http://www.arlynscales.com/platform-scales-s/3.htm" target="_blank">platform scales</a>, drum scales or floor scales. In all of these cases, a highly accurate industrial scale can detect very small changes in the weight of liquid in the container. As the material is dispensed, some types of electronic scales, such as those manufactured by Arlyn Scales, can keep a record of the remaining weight at each moment of time. By calculating the change in weight over periods of time, the flow rate may be calculated. This rate may be shown as pounds per minute or hour. If the specific gravity of the liquid has been input, the industrial scale can also display this in gallons or liters per minute or hour.</p>
<p>The flow rate calculation must have the ability to average small changes in the dispense rates. Even with excellent scale sensitivity, this rate must be high enough for change in weight to be measure able in reasonably short periods of time. If the user can accept a longer time to achieve a displayed result, then the scale will be able to measure even slower flow rates. It is important that an electronic scale with the correct capacity be chosen for the size of the container that is being weighed.</p></div>
