Veterinary Scales

It is always important for veterinarians to ascertain the weight of the animals they are treating. When treating humans, doctors generally have standard dosages. So when a patient is told to take two aspirin, that will be the case for a small woman, or a large man. But even with this size difference, the dosage will be within the tolerable limits. But dogs may range in size from very large, to miniature. The comparison may easily be ten to one. So the veterinarian cannot prescribe a standard dosage.

Veterinary scales are required to weigh the animals. There are a number of characteristics that such a scale should have. Most importantly, it should be accurate. It should be large enough for even the largest pet to stand on. Also, it should have a low profile, so that it is easy to step onto. The weight should read the same if the animal stands in the middle, or all the way in one corner. And it should have a non-slip surface to make it easier to walk on.

Ideally, veterinary scales should also have large, easy to read digits on the digital display, so it can be read from a distance. Metric conversion is also useful, so the weight can be determined in either pounds or kilograms. Furthermore, a tare function allows the veterinarian to subtract their own weight if they wish to read the weight of an animal that they are holding.
